Named after Celia M. Hunter, she founded what is probably one of North America’s first eco-tourism sites in 1952, Camp Denali. Celia became a cornerstone of the conservation movement in Alaska and founded the Alaska Conservation Society, which won many of Alaska’s most important environmental battles. On the night she died, she had been up late writing letters to Congressmen in support of protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from drilling. “You just have to keep a fire in your belly, and you just go for it, and when you do, you can make a tremendous difference.”
